SIP Trunking

SIP Trunking for Your Business

What is SIP Trunking?

SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) is a method of transmitting voice and data over the internet at a lower cost than using the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). In cases where businesses are paying two bills for their phone and internet, SIP trunking can allow companies to combine bandwith for SIP trunking and the internet on a single internet circuit, thus lowering their recurring monthly telephone bill. Bandwiths vary according to the number of users and amount of data in a given location, General Communications will help you determine your needs.

Why Businesses are Choosing SIP Trunking in Addition to, or as a Replacement for Traditional Telco Services

SIP Trunking is an economical and flexible transport protocol. It is less expensive for carriers to provide to end users and because it is relatively new to the marketplace, customers are discovering innovative ways to improve things such as telephone line redundancy, disaster recovery, unified communications and more.

Is SIP Trunking Compatible with my Phone System?

All phone systems offered by General Communications support SIP Trunking. However, some SIP providers may have slightly unique integration that must be reviewed before choosing a carrier for SIP transport. Some PBX systems are capable of connecting directly to SIP trunks as long as the PBX manufacturer has certified its integration with specific carriers. In other situations, a SIP conversion is possible to mimic standard POTS lines or T1/PRI, which can eliminate the need for carrier/PBX certification.
